Type Locality and Naming

Named by District Survey Team of Fujian Geological Bureau in 1965). The named section is located in Xiwei Village, Datian County, Fujian Province.

Lithology and Thickness

Characterized by a set of purple red complex with calcareous siltstone; rippled, veined, lenticular tidal bedding developed. Thickness is 398 to 727 m

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Bottom boundary is marked by the appearance of purple sandstone. It is in conformable contact with underlying Xikou Fm of Lower Triassic.

Upper contact

Top boundary is marked by the disappearance of purple strata. It is in conformable contact with overlying Anren Fm of Upper Middle Triassic.

Regional extent

Distribution is limited, limited to parts of Longyan, Zhangping and Datian in Fujian, and may also be partly exposed near the Xingning, northern Guangdong Province.

Fossils

In the lower part of bivalves, can build Eumorphotis inaequicostata-Entolium discites microtis assemblages; Unionites sp., Pachymya (Arcomya) sp., Entolium discites etc. can be found in the upper part.


Age 

Original Xiwei Formation is a set of shallow sea facies clastic rocks deposited continuously on Xikou Formation of Lower Triassic in central Fujian. Zhao Jinke et al (1982) limited the age of this formation to the middle Late Middle Triassic to Early Middle Triassic. Wu Faming (1985) dates this formation to the late Early Triassic.
